District II Legion Of Honor Hosts Annual Oplatek
By Joan Beilfuss, Jane Krzyzanski and Jan Merzweiler, Event Organizers
The District II Legion of Honor held its annual Oplatek dinner at the Crystal Light in Burbank, Ill., on Sunday, January 14. Chairperson Joan Beilfuss welcomed all in attendance, and Druhna Lottie Fik led the singing of the Polish and American anthems.
After the anthems were sung, there was a moment of silence for all deceased members. Each Nest then lit a candle for all those who passed away and those who could not be with us for this occasion. The Oplatek wafer was shared, followed by the invocation. Afterward, dinner was served.
Guests joining us for the afternoon included members of each Nest in District II, the Polish Women’s Alliance and the Polish Roman Catholic Union.
The District II President and Legion of Honor co-Chairperson Jane Krzyzanski extended her greetings. District II National Director Ron Merzweiler then wished all in attendance a happy new year and said he hoped 2007 would be a good year.
Entertainment was provided by the Lechici Dancers, who also led us in singing the Kolendy. This was assisted by Druhna Fik, with all guests eventually joining in the festivities.
A “thank you” to all who attended the Oplatek, especially with the threat of a winter storm that was on the way for the Illinois region.
