Artists, Translators: We're Looking For You

The PFA Cultural Commission is trying to put together a coloring/activity book, and even though we are doing fine regarding the activity pages, we are in need of members who can draw. If you would like to lend a helping hand (or pen), I can be reached by e-mail.

If you are interested in finding someone who can translate Polish into English (or vice versa), I know a person who is great at translating. Her name is Krystina Lizak, and she has her own translation service. She can be reached by phone at (585) 576-9354 or by e-mail. Also, if you or someone you know is able to do English/Polish translations, send me that person’s contact information and I will publish it in a future column.

Did you know that in Poland bread is considered a gift of God and that salt is thought by many as a necessity of life? Poles, therefore, combine the two and offer them on a tray at various occasions as a gesture of hospitality. If your Nest is having a part or banquet, this would be a great way to introduce a Polish custom. Have two people (in Polish costumes if possible) welcome your guests with the bread and salt as they enter, saying “may you never go hungry” as they take the bread and “may your life be prosperous” as they take the salt (you can also simply say “health and happiness”).
