A Profile Of Matthew Pomykala
Growing up in a family involved with the Polish Falcons of America, Matthew Pomykala of Nest 88, New Britain, Conn., has been immersed with Polish culture his entire life, thanks in large part to parents, relatives, friends and mentors. Because of this lifelong experience, Matthew has taken part in a variety of Nest 88 activities, including Nest picnics and Pulaski Day parades. He is also a member of the Jozef Pilsudski Institute of America, which gathers information on the modern history of Poland.
Matthew has volunteered at a number of events related to his medical career aspirations, including those at assisted living facilities, clinics and health centers. He even traveled to Washington, D.C., several times last year to take part in lobbying efforts concerning health-care issues. While many of his volunteer activities were near his home or school, some events took place from as far away as India, which is where he volunteered at a charity eye hospital in June of 2006.
A medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, Matthew recently drafted a new program for the institution dealing with diagnostic testing for diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, body mass index and other unhealthy behaviors.
Upon graduation from medical school, Matthew’s goal is to improve the lives of patients from his local community, along with providing services as an administrator and policy maker in the health-care field. “It is my goal to enrich society through awareness of a simple concept –– that a healthy mind and spirit will produce a healthy body. All of which when applied for the good of mankind will benefit society, advance its objectives and goals, and most importantly pass down its beliefs and traditions to the next generation,” Matthew wrote in his application letter.
