Teresa Higgins Profiled For Environmental Success

In 2006, Higgins became Colorado’s interim director of Project WET, which stands for Water Education for Teachers. This national program provides schools with classroom teaching materials that introduce students to basic concepts surrounding water resources.
As state coordinator for Project WET, Higgins works to get the environmental curriculum into Colorado public schools. These workshops take teachers through the hands-on activities they are encouraged to use with their students. For example, one activity in Project WET explains the life of a water molecule, from clouds to groundwater to oceans to the tiniest molecules that are locked up in glaciers.
Higgins said the relevance of science to daily life is part of her passion for teaching it. “Someday these students will be making decisions that will affect the environment around us. And they need to develop their own opinions, their own understanding, so they can make informed decisions,” she told Northern Vision Magazine.
A 1977 Dr. T.A. Starzynski recipient, Higgins graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1981 from St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa. In 1985, she received a Master’s Degree in Science Education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Science Education from the University of Georgia in 1991. She is the daughter of Nest 182 member, and former Polish Falcons of America National Secretary/Treasurer Thaddeus Kokoski and the late Dolores Kokoski. Higgins resides in Longmont, Col., with her husband Stephen and son Matthew.
