Member Has "Deal Of A Lifetime"
By Nancy Konopacki, Nest 336 Recording Secretary
Because her personality stands out in a crowd, Nest 336, Jackson, Mich., member Beth Eva won an unlikely brush with fame and fortune in January by appearing on the hit television game show “Deal or No Deal.”

It started when Eva, 38, went to Chicago, Ill., on a shopping trip with relatives in October of 2006. By coincidence, producers from “Deal or No Deal” were holding auditions at Chicago’s Navy Pier the same weekend. After standing in line for nearly five hours, Eva received a ticket entitling her to return the next day for a casting call. The next morning, Eva and other people selected for this casting auditioned in groups of 10. Eva was one of the few selected to make an audition tape that was sent to NBC studios. On January 3, Eva received a call from “Deal or No Deal” producers in Hollywood, Calif., who asked her to appear on the show.

“Deal or No Deal” is a game show where a contestant has to select from 26 briefcases. Each briefcase contains a certain amount of money (sometimes more than one million dollars) that is unknown to the contestant and audience. The contestant then must eliminate the remaining 25 cases, which are opened and the amount of cash inside revealed. After a pre-determined number of cases are opened, the contestant is tempted by a mysterious entity known only as “the Banker” to accept an offer of cash in exchange for what might be contained in the contestant’s chosen briefcase, prompting host Howie Mandel to ask the contestant, “Deal or No Deal?”
Thirteen other people accompanied Eva on a trip to Hollywood to appear on the show’s January 18 taping. Eva and all those attending the program were unable to disclose the winnings until the show was televised on February 28. Selected as her support group on the show was mother Sue Kelley, husband John, sister Betsy Domschot and cousin Michelle Shipman. Singing their “WA, WA, WA” and waving white hankies, their Polish nationality was proudly shown. (Eva was the first Michigan contestant to appear on the show.)

On February 28, a large gathering of family, friends and members came to watch the show at the Nest 336 Club. Also in attendance were 26 models toting briefcases and a Mandel look-a-like. Eva’s winnings totaled $49,000, and she said it was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Father Reverend Slawanic Jakubiec from Saint Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Mich., honored us with his presence for the Mass. The Dave Slivinski Polka Band from Frankenmuth, Mich., played Kolendas during the Mass and later at a dance celebration. Falcon members and Gene Davis’s catering prepared the dinner, which featuring many delicious Polish dishes. It was truly a memorable evening for all in attendance.
