Stefanie Gargano Awarded Scholarship
By Frank Winters, Communications Director
Nest 519, Middletown, Conn., member Stefanie Gargano was recently awarded a scholarship by the New England Fraternal Congress (NEFC), which is made up of the fraternal benefit societies of the six New England states.
Gargano, a junior at The University of Pennsylvania, is majoring in Health and Human Societies. She is currently spending a semester in Australia studying that region’s government and health care system.
“It’s been interesting to learn about their more ‘socialized’ health care system,” Gargano, a 2005-’06 Dr. T.A. Starzynski Scholarship recipient, said. “It’s been a great experience and will be difficult to leave Australia in the middle of their summer to return to Philadelphia in the middle of winter.”

Nest 519 Honors All Ages Of Falcon Family Members
By Ed Mikucki, Nest 519 Member
Nest 519, Middletown, Conn., has been celebrating family fun these past few months. On May 13, the Nest held its annual Mother’s Day Breakfast, where families were able to bring their mother down for a nice sit-down breakfast. We then held our Father’s Day Brunch a month later on June 17, where fathers and their families enjoyed a brunch buffet that included a carving station.
The following Sunday after the Father’s Day Brunch, we had a kid’s party on the deck and beach area of our Nest. The party was a send-off for our children going to represent us at the recent National Zlot that was held in Michigan. There were also many other children and their families who got to witness a little demonstration of what goes on at the Nationals, including some of the Drills. Along with burgers and hot dogs, all in attendance enjoyed a variety of games that were played.
This kid’s party was the first event of the summer for the Nest 519 youth and their families. We will be offering burgers and hot dogs Sundays through September 2 to our members and families in an effort to give them a great value and a good place to go. Thanks to all of the volunteers that make these kind of events possible.

Connecticut Members Gather For Penguin Plunge
By Ed Mikucki, Nest 519 Member
Nest 519, Middletown, Conn., hosted the Seventh Annual Penguin Plunge on March 10, where 178 jumpers braved the icy waters of nearby Crystal Lake to raise money for a good cause.
This year, the event raised more than $55,000, which went to the Special Olympics of Connecticut. Nest 519 not only hosted this event, but we also had many participants, including Joe Mclean, the Plunge’s founder. Other participants included Nest 519 President Jason Pike, Krissy Mikucki and Dennis Distefano, all of whom have jumped in every year since the start.

The Club also was honored with many awards: Nest 519 and Nest 307, Southington, Conn., won the club emperor award for raising more than $12,000. Nest 519 is also very proud of Charlie Krug for winning the emperor award again. Charlie raised more than $6,000 by himself, and he was rewarded by his efforts with a free cruise to the Bahamas. Another member to note is Jane Boyce, who also received an award for raising more than $1,500.
Nest 519 would like to thank all who participated and contributed to make this year the best one yet. We would also like to thank the countless number of volunteers, especially those who came in on Friday with hip waders and chain saws to cut the ice away for the brave jumpers. Let’s hope we can make the Eighth Annual Penguin Plunge even better. See you next year!

Greco Family A Cornerstone Of Nest 519
By Jane Opalacz, Nest 519 Member
They haven’t been Falcon members for that long if you measure time by years of service as compared to other Falcon members, but when they joined in 1983 they immediately made a mark in our Falcon organization. Nest 519, Middletown, Conn., recently awarded Druhna Kay Greco and her husband, Druh Mel Greco, the Bronze Legion of Honor at its annual awards brunch.
This husband and wife team has worked together for more than 25 years to better Nest 519 and District V, and they have been involved in a variety of committees, activities and fundraisers. [Full Story]
