La Porte Triathlete Competes For Charity
By Frank Winters, Communications Director
On May 19-20, Nest 564, La Porte Ind., member Lisa Macalka took part in the annual Honolulu Triathlon as a member of a fundraising effort that helps those with leukemia.

Assisting Macalka, who currently resides in Dublin, Calif., was an organization called “Team in Training,” whose goal is to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, as well as improving the quality of life for patients and their families. At least 75 percent of the funds raised by this highly regarded nonprofit go directly to research and patient services.

Macalka’s four-month training regimen included professional coaches, daily workout schedules and bi-weekly team workouts with 72 other triathletes. As an added inspiration for her goal of successfully completing this endurance event, which included just under one mile of swimming, more than 24 miles of biking and six miles of running,

A Falcon member since birth, Lisa is the daughter of Adeline and the late Walter Macalka. She was an active gymnast as a youth and participated in numerous District and National Zlots. She is dedicated to this cause in honor of a college friend who has recently undergone a double mastectomy, and Macalka has already raised more than $5,000 dedicated to medical research.

Even though the triathlon has already taken place, you can still donate to Macalka’s cause. Her Team in Training Web page is still accepting donations and can be reached by clicking here.
