More than $3,800 was raised at this year’s event, and 32 teams took part in the two-day competition, which showed the true Falcon spirit and sportsmanship. Members donated gifts for raffles that were held during this event and cooked plenty of wonderful food to keep the players happy. Local businesses also donated items for the raffles, along with providing monetary donations.
Wayne Ciepiela and Mike Mullen took first place while Dick Mezzy and Mike Lacy claimed second. Walt Mezzy and Dick Beattie finished third. All three of these teams received trophies and gift certificates to local restaurants.
A special thanks goes out to Heather and Matt Murphy, along with John Collins and Ed Mlynarczyk. Thanks are also in order to the wonderful ladies of the back room, Josie Daviau Cathy Saldo, and Helen Pauline Cimini, who kept the raffles going and the money coming in. Thank you also to all of the people that donated their time and cooked for this event, which gets better with every passing year. It makes me proud to be a Falcon, and I’m sure Ed is looking down on us with a smile.

Nest 580 Members Excel On The Volleyball Court
By Catherine Mlynarczyk, Nest 580 Physical Instructress
Two Nest 580, Pittsfield, Mass., members have made their presence felt in the Massachusetts area when it comes to high school volleyball.

Amelia Janis. |
Amelia Janis of Pittsfield High School and Noelle Skowron of Taconic High School were recently selected as members of the “All-Eagle Volleyball Team,” an honor bestowed by The Berkshire Eagle, a daily newspaper.
Janis has amassed more than 1,000 assists for her career and 482 this season, which her coach Brian Lawton said was the best season any setter has had for the Pittsfield Generals.
Lawton added he knew Janis was going to be a special player. As a freshman, she had started one varsity match as an injury replacement and finished with 14 assists. In fact, with this being her final year, she helped take her team to second place at a recent western Massachusetts tournament.

Noelle Skowron. |
Skowron was another force on the volleyball court for her team. As a setter, her coach said that he considers Skowron to be one of the top two pure setters in their league, and she was one of the few players capable of performing back sets. While on the Taconic Braves squad, Skowron made her biggest impact with consistent passing. Despite touching the ball on nearly every possession while out on the court, she committed just 41 unforced errors for the season.
Both Janis and Skowron took part in the Polish Falcons Youth Volleyball Program when they were very young, and I’m sure that the training they received with us helped give them the skills and confidence to play in the public school system. Both were also captains of their respective teams.
Even though I have gone to see many of their league games to cheer them on, when they faced each other in a recent East/West All-Star game, I quietly sat and watched.
