David Beresford Wins "Voice Of Democracy" Award

By Joan Pawlukiewicz, Nest 79 President
David Beresford of Nest 79, Southgate, Mich., was recently honored with more than $10,000 in scholarships by the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization (VFW) and its Ladies’ Auxiliary in their 60th Annual Voice of Democracy audio essay contest.
Currently a junior in high school, Beresford is the grandson of David and Eileen Pydyn and is the great-grandson of Ben Pydyn, all Nest 79 members.

David Beresford.

Each year, thousands of students from grades 9-12 participate in this national scholarship program, which provides more than $3 million in scholarships annually. This year’s topic, “Freedom’s Challenge,” had more than 85,000 entrants. After winning a local VFW contest in Northville, Mich., Beresford took first place in the 4th District competition, held in early January. The state finals took place during the last weekend of January in Kalamazoo, Mich., where Beresford once again won first-place honors in the Michigan state finals.

Along with his scholarships, Beresford traveled to Washington, DC, in early March, where he spent five days touring our nation’s capital with the other state champions. This trip included a visit to the White House and a meeting with First Lady Laura Bush. In the “Parade of Winners” on March 5, Beresford’s essay, “The Challenge of Freedom,” placed 10th in the nation. In June, Beresford will join all other department winners for a week at the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge, Pa. Below is a transcript of Beresford’s speech.
