Youth Members Take Part In Parade
By Mary Staszewski, Nest 80 Recording Secretary
For more than 80 years, South Bend has held a parade on the city’s west side each Memorial Day. This year, the parade was the largest ever conducted with more than 100 participants involved. South Bend’s Nest 80 Z.B. Falcons has always been a part of this parade, and this year the Nest’s youth class took first place in the float category. This is the third year in a row that Nest 80’s youth members have done a wonderful job designing their float to display the parade’s theme for that year.
Way to go, Nest 80 Youth Class!

Member Sought Career In Law Enforcement
By Joshua Stowe, South Bend Tribune Reporter
As a high school senior, Kelly Dulcet of Nest 80, South Bend, Ind., turned down a college scholarship to play volleyball out-of-state so she could stay in her hometown and become a police officer.
As a criminal justice major at Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), she took summer school classes so she could finish her education early and join the local police department.
As a cadet with the South Bend Police Department, Dulcet seized every chance to learn about police work so she could become a well-rounded officer.
Dulcet, 21, died on July 12, just months before she was set to graduate from IUSB and apply for a job with the South Bend Police Department.
“She just wanted to finish school so that she could start her career in law enforcement, “Dennis Dulcet, her father, said to The South Bend Tribune.
Dennis traced his daughter’s love of police work to her childhood, when he would tell her stories from his everyday work as an officer with the St. Joseph County Police Department.
“A lot of day-to-day stuff that we did, going to serious calls ... she just liked to sit there and listen to these stories,” he said.
Dulcet carried that passion into college, said her mother, Ruth Dulcet. She was scheduled to graduate from IUSB in December, just three and a half years after she began her studies.
“All she wanted to do was get through school and be an officer,” Ruth Dulcet told the Tribune.
Dulcet got an early taste of police work by joining the South Bend Police Department’s cadet program, which is designed for college students considering a career in law enforcement.
As a participant in the program, she answered phones at the police station’s front desk, assisted a detective who conducts fraud investigations and worked on a youth recreation program, police and family members said.
She also played the role of a suspect in exercises designed to help police improve their search skills and practiced shooting with the SWAT team.
“That was her ultimate goal,” her father said. “She wanted to be the first female SWAT officer.”
Given Dulcet’s extensive experience as a cadet, officers expected her to be a “shoo-in” when she applied to work for the department, said Capt. Phil Trent, a spokesman.
“Kelly had been a member of Nest 80 since 1989 when she joined as a Tiny Tot,” said Nest 80 Officer Mary Staszewski. “She was one special young lady.”
