  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional but festive!)
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Sprinkles or icing for decorating

Instructions

Make the dough:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients, mixing until combined.
  6. Add milk to bring the dough together—soft but not sticky.

Shape:

  • For cut-outs:
    • Roll out dough on a floured surface to ¼ inch thick.
    • Cut into holiday shapes.
  • For drop cookies:
    • Roll dough into balls and flatten slightly.

Bake:

  1. Bake cookies on an ungreased baking sheet for 8–10 minutes, until edges are just starting to turn golden.
  2. Cool completely before decorating.

Easy Icing

Mix:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla
(Add food coloring if you like!)
